Shares retreated on Monday on both national exchanges with a total of 357 codes losing value. On the HCM (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=HCM&q=HCM&language=en) Stock Exchange, the VN-Index lost 1.12 per cent to close at 396.41 points.
Market value, however, gained 6.4 per cent to VND462.7 billion (US$22.5 million) over last Friday's session, although market volume dropped slightly to 24.7 million shares.
The 10 leading shares by capitalisation tumbled, with PetroVietnam Finance (PVF (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=PVF&q=PVF&language=en)) hitting the floor and only insurer Bao Viet Holdings (BVH (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=BVH&q=BVH&language=en)) making a gain, climbing 0.8 per cent.
Other blue chips also lost ground, including steel maker Hoa Phat Group (HPG (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=HPG&q=HPG&language=en)) closing down 3.1 per cent and Vietcombank (VCB (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=VCB&q=VCB&language=en)) down 1.1 per cent.
Sacombank (STB (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=STB&q=STB&language=en)) was the most active code with nearly 3.2 million shares exchanged.
On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=HNX&q=HNX&language=en)-Index plunged 1.8 per cent to finish at 67.32 points.
Trades were meagre with only 23.4 million shares worth VND228.7 billion ($11.1 million), a decrease of 33.3 per cent from Friday in terms of value.
Kim Long Securities Company (KLS (http://finance.vietstock.vn/StockDetail.aspx?scode=KLS&q=KLS&language=en)) claimed the highest trading volume in Ha Noi, seeing 2.8 million shares changing hands.
